Formed in Karachi against General Zia-ul-Haq's Islamisation laws, especially the Hudood Ordinances and a law of evidence that halved the worth of women's testimony. On 12 February 1983 women marching in Lahore were tear-gassed and beaten; the date is now Pakistan's National Women's Day.
Women lawyers, writers and activists, including Asma Jahangir and Hina Jilani.
Repeal of the Hudood Ordinances and discriminatory evidence laws; women's equal rights as citizens.
