Muslim women's groups, led by the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan, campaigned against instant triple talaq and for codified Muslim family law. In 2017 the Supreme Court held instant triple talaq unconstitutional in the Shayara Bano case; the 2019 law that made it a crime divided feminists.
