The death of Savita Halappanavar in a Galway hospital in 2012, after she was refused an abortion during a miscarriage, galvanised the campaign to repeal the constitutional amendment that equated the life of the unborn with that of the mother. In May 2018, 66.4 per cent voted to repeal it.
