Delhi women's groups such as Stree Sangharsh and Mahila Dakshata Samiti protested outside the homes of families accused of 'dowry deaths' passed off as kitchen accidents. Their campaigns led to Section 498A on cruelty by husbands and in-laws in 1983 and stronger dowry laws.
